On 23 April, the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe hosted the Beate Naroska Award Ceremony at DESY auditorium. The guest professorships are part of the commitment to equality and diversity and are awarded annually to two outstanding women scientists. Dr. Mariana Graña and Dr. Jennifer Schober were honoured as the 2023 awardees.
The Beate Naroska Prize winners of 2023 were honoured at a festive award ceremony in the DESY Auditorium on 23 April. The Beate Naroska Senior Guest Professorship was awarded to Dr. Mariana Graña, Director of Research at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Paris-Saclay (CEA/CNRS). The Junior Visiting Professorship was awarded to Dr. Jennifer Schober, research group leader at the Laboratory of Astrophysics (LASTRO), at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
The namesake of the prize, particle physicist Beate Naroska, was one of the leading scientists of the H1 experiment at DESY's HERA ring. From 1989 to 2008, Beate Naroska was a professor at the University of Hamburg. She was a devoted mentor for many students and young researchers.
With the Beate Naroska Prize, the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe highlights the scientific achievements of women physicists and their contributions to gender equality and diversity in science. The prize is awarded annually as a junior and senior visiting professorship to two successful female scientists. The candidates can be nominated by others or apply themselves. The selection criteria are both excellent research and an active commitment as a role model in their field.
The visiting professorship includes a certificate and personal prize money as well as an invitation to spend up to six months in Hamburg in order to further build up connections within Quantum Universe and foster both research and diversity activities.

Beate Naroska
Particle physicist Beate Naroska (1943–2008) was a professor at Universität Hamburg from 1989 to 2008. During this time, she was one of the leading scientists of the H1 experiment at DESY's HERA collider. As a professor, she was a mentor for many students and young researchers. Beate Naroska studied physics in Göttingen and Hamburg. After her diploma, she received her doctorate at Universität Hamburg under Martin Teucher. From 1971 to 1978, she worked at CERN, where she conducted research on proton–proton scattering and on the development of multiwire proportional chambers. She then returned to DESY where she joined the JADE experiment at PETRA as responsible of the TOF system and researching on electroweak phenomena.
