Having grown up in Villingen-Schwenningen, a city in the Black Forest region, Lorenz has been living in Stuttgart for the last 9 years studying mathematics. During his time at the University of Stuttgart, he worked on Gauge Choices in the Setting of Gravitational Waves. Having graduated from there in early 2024, he has since moved to Hamburg to do a PhD in the Analysis and Differential geometry group and looks forward to experiencing all that Hamburg has to offer.
What is the topic of your research?
I work with Prof. Dr. Vicente Cortés and Prof. Dr. Shubham Dwivedi on generalized geometry with a particular focus on generalized Ricci flow. I also study questions relating to generalized Ricci solitons which are a special kind of solution to flow equations.
What fascinates you about your research focus?
I have the opportunity to apply the Ricci flow to the comparatively new field of generalized geometry. The Ricci flow has been used to make impressive breakthroughs in differential geometry over the last few decades and combines the theory of partial differential equations with Riemannian geometry. I am very fascinated by this interplay between analysis and geometry
What do you like about the cluster Quantum Universe?
I appreciate the opportunity to connect with fellow PhD students and postdocs through various social events offered by the Quantum Universe, such as the regular QU Days and the QU retreat at Helgoland earlier this year. I also really value the generous travel budget given to me, which has allowed me to attend conferences I otherwise would not have had the chance to attend.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy running, bouldering, indoor climbing, and going to the gym. It’s important for me to relax after a long busy day filled with Mathematics!
