For the second time, the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe invited young researchers from Hamburg to a networking event about career paths in the field of Data Science.
Data science is playing an increasingly important role in particle physics and astrophysics, for example in the analysis of measured data from particle accelerators such as the LHC or telescopes. But not all young researchers stay at a university for the long term. Fifty young scientists had the opportunity to learn about career paths in the field of data science outside of university research at the second “Data Science QUareer Night” of the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe on July 20. Six physicists with PhDs from various companies gave exciting insights into their work in industry.
“After a long pandemic-related break, we were finally able to offer a QUareer Night again”, says Gregor Kasieczka. He is professor for machine learning in particle physics and principal investigator at the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe. “The contribution of young researchers to our cluster is essential. But not all of them want to stay at a university for the long term. In fundamental research, they acquire valuable qualifications that are also in high demand outside universities, so we are happy to provide them with their first contacts in industry.”
